10 Tips To Keep Your Lil Pumpkins Safe This Halloween
This is a fun time of the year for you and your kids. Here are 10 simple tips to stay safe this Halloween.
Make Safety Part Of The Costume
1. Add reflective elements to costumes and candy bags, such as reflective tape or stickers. If it’s cold enough that your kids will need to wear a coat or jacket, don’t forget to add reflective elements to that, as well.
2. Lighter colored costumes are better. Dark costumes blend in with the night. Kids are twice as likely to get hit and killed by an automobile on Halloween, over any other day of the year. (safekids.org)
3. Have your child carry a glow stick. It can easily become a part of their costume as a light saber or magic wand, for example. Glow necklaces are equally effective, plus your kids will love it!
Trick-or-Treat Etiquette
4. Trick-or-treat with your kids, especially if they are under 12 years old. Make it a family night. Your kids will love spending the extra time with you. BONUS: You can feel like a kid again and dress up, too!
5. If you are allowing your kids 12 and over to trick-or-treat alone, make sure they are going with a group. Outline specific neighborhoods they should stay in and have them check in with you often and set a specific time to be home. (Double check that their phones have a full charge before they head out)
6. The unofficial Trick-or-Treating hours are 5:30pm-9:30pm. If you’re driving during these hours, be extra alert.
Last, But Not Least
7. Its best to have your kids wait to eat any candy until you can check it out (you might even have to taste test a few pieces first!) Throw out anything that isn’t in individual packaging, or, if the packaging is ripped or appears to have been altered in anyway. Homemade treats should be thrown out, too, unless you know who/where it came from and its a trusted source.
8. Dress for the weather. If it’s cold, bundle up!
9. Bring a small first aid kit with you with bandages, antibacterial ointment and\or wipes.
10. Last, but not least, have a good time! Take lots of pictures that you can share on social media and get into the spirit of things.
